Avandia Drug

Avandia, also known by its generic name rosiglitazone, is an oral medication used by patients with type 2 diabetes. Avandia became available in the late 90’s and has been a multi billion dollar medication that took the industry by storm as a rising amount of diabetes diagnosis. From this mass appeal of the drug, large controversy has formed from its potentially deadly side effects. While Avandia is great at being a convenient and effective method of controlling glucose, it has an adverse effect of triggering water retention and congestive heart failure.

Starting around 2007, a growing body of evidence suggests that Avandia increases the risk of heart disease and death. Since there are alternative medications available, the health community has responded by no longer prescribing Avandia as a diabetes medication as the risks outweigh the benefits. The adverse effects of Avandia are:

  • Heart Failure
  • Heart Attacks
  • Death
  • Stroke
  • Bone Fractures
  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Weight Gain
  • Eye Damage
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Contraindications

See your doctor if you have concerns about the safety of Avandia or if you have experienced serious side effects associated with the drug.
