Legionella and Legionnaires’ Disease Cases
Legionnaires’ Disease is an respiratory pneumonia typically caused by inhaling a microorganism. The majority of Legionnaires infections are caused by inhalation of water vapor, or soil contaminated with the bacteria. The optimal environment for the organism to reproduce is wet or damp and at temperatures between 77 and 113 °F. The elderly young children and those with compromised immune system are the hardest hit by this disease. In the U.S. there have been several high profile Legionella and Legionnaires’ Disease cases.
Legionnaires’ Disease Symptoms
From exposure to the appearance of symptoms it typically takes between 2 – 10 days. There have been known cases where as much as twenty days have passed from exposure until symptoms began. Common symptoms include: fever, chills, and cough. Most people with the disease experience fever. Of people with the disease only half experience a cough, and one third of those a bloody cough. Other less common symptoms include: diarrhea, vomiting, loss of coordination, chest pain, muscle aches, headache, or fatigue.
Legionnaires’ Disease Infection
From industrial equipment to home appliances this deadly disease can breed in a variety of places, including:
- Air conditioning systems
- Cooling towers
- Ice machines
Commercial and residential buildings, cruise ships, hospitals, and convention centers are a few places where there have been Legionnaires’ Disease outbreaks. In these situations the disease is often spread through poorly maintained water and air systems. If these systems are not properly cleaned and maintained the bacteria that causes the disease can grow and spread. Under such circumstances unsuspecting people can be exposed to Legionnaires’ Disease and become sick.
