According to the American Diabetes Association, around 28 million Americans have type 2 diabetes. This means that their bodies are unable to produce insulin correctly. Insulin is created in the pancreas, and initially the pancreas will over produce insulin. When the pancreas is unable to create enough insulin, glucose levels in the blood become unstable and medication may be needed to treat the condition. There are many prescription drugs used to aid in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, one of which is Avandia or its generic form rosiglitazone. The drug is meant to lower blood glucose in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes however, it has been found that this drug may cause numerous dangerous side effects.
Most notably, Roseville Avandia drug cases have been linked to very serious heart conditions. Side effects that have been found in patients taking Avandia include the following:
- Edema (fluid retention that leads to weight gain and swelling)
- Tachycardia (abnormally fast heartbeat)
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea and vomiting
- Chest pain
- Congestive heart failure
- Increased risk of heart attack
The risk of heart attack was increased by 43 percent in patients. Approximately 100,000 heart attacks have been linked to cases like those of Roseville Avandia drug patients and after one year of use the risk of heart failure in patients doubles. Despite tests proving Roseville Avandia drug recipients stand significant risk of dangerous side effects, no recall has ever been announced.
Some of the risks have been added to the warning label however, many doctors and patients feel this information should have been made available much sooner. So far it is estimated that 50,000 claims made against the company GlaxoSmithKline have been settled.
It is always very important to consult your physician when you have concerns regarding a drug that has been prescribed. If you or a family member is a Roseville Avandia drug patient and have experienced adverse side effects, speak with your doctor. If you have been injured in any way as a result of this medication, contact a local personal injury attorney who may be able to help.
